<< Back to My Wii Guides
I have just followed the guide found over at digital-kaos.co.uk Titled: wii-4-2e-softmod-tutorial-easy-follow-guide Which worked for me to I’ve re-posted it here with images, the reason i followed the guide was:
- It had a link to download ‘everything you need’ found here to download
- This quote I’ve hacked up: ” …. multi mod manager. .. automated… It’s now more difficult to get it wrong than it is to get it right!!”
Here is the basic outline of what needs to be done, if your not sure of the acronyms here or how it works you might want to read My Quick intro to the concepts of wii hacking (Which i need to update) and Complete List of IOS files To get an understanding of what is what. Steps Required to Get USB Loaders to Work:
- Install the Home brew Channel. (Guide for BannerBomb (4.2) and Homebrew install )
- (In this Guide) Install / Patch IOS36 (required to install the items in step3)
- (In this Guide) Clear out non-system cIOS files (may have been put there by Nintendo or previous installs that may make the next steps fail)
- (In this Guide) Install the cIOS files (required by the USB Loader Program in next steps)
- Load Uloader (included in the pack .. use this to format a hdd and backup a game to test this all works)
- Shop around for another loader (I user USB Loader GX and investigate WBFS application for copying backed up games to the HDD.
- Buy online/download wii games or from an offline shop some games and back them up.
Here are the instruction steps and screen shots of each step, I hope you find it useful: At the end of this guide you should be able to use any usb-loader you like or test using the one included. if you can load the and control the interface with the pointed then you have been successful.
1. Copy the contents of the pack you downloaded (20mb) onto the root of your SD card keeping the folder structure. Overwrite any existing files.2. Power on your Wii and go into the Homebrew Channel. You should see something like the shot below. |

7A Press down so Remove stubbed IOS is selected then press A.The Stubbed IOS files are files that are generally over IOS200 and higher, because they are used by the modding community its usually safe to remove them, if Nintendo update one of these IOS files with a dummy file it can hinder our progress, so this step clears out the IOS files we will be installing later, but we do not want to remove all of them. Please read the following steps carefully to ensure only the correct IOS files are removed. |

Extra Information:
Technically You are now set for playing backups on your Wii.
To get started try using the uloader program from the homebrew channel, this will let you get familiar with it and possibly experiment formatting a HDD or USB drive to test backing up a game.
If you would like to use a different USB loader there a few things to learn, Simple (Copy another usbloader to the apps folder of your SD card.A little harder is to find a USBloader that can be loaded into your Wii Channels (This will normally be in the form of a WAD file you will need to load via the WAD manager.)
There are a lot of USBloaders around and most of them allow cover art downloading and backing up games + formatting the hdd for you.
There is 1 final application that should be looked at and that is WBFS manager for windows which is great for moving ISO -> WBFS HDD and from WBFS HDD to another drive, you can also format your drive using this in the WBFS format if your usbloader can’t see the drive.
I Hope this helps, please leave a comment if it does, you can try the original forum thread if you have any issues as there are 52 pages of people providing help here: wii-4-2e-softmod-tutorial-easy-follow-guide
